- History and Key Issues of Digital Culture
Understand the origins and development of digital culture (socially, technologically). Identify and meaningfully discuss major issues in digital culture (openness, control, participation, information theory). (Assessment via midterm exam the first week of October) - Digital Literacy
Gain proficiency in being able to 1) consume; 2) create; and 3) connect using available communications and media technology. (Assessment: Document learning via regular use of Google+, blog, or approved other medium) - Self-Directed Learning
Demonstrate independence in finding, reading, filtering, and sharing ideas and resources. Identify and develop a significant topic relative to digital culture using the tiered content model. This must include selecting and reading one nonfiction work from the Digital Culture bookshelf on Goodreads or ebrary; plus one novel (preferably one being read for another course or one that you have read more than once). (Assessment: instructor interview end of September) - Collaborative Creativity
Work with others (in part, via communication and collaboration tools such as Google Docs or Skype) in three creative projects: - Midterm Content
Propose terms and prepare questions for the midterm exam (first week of October) - Open Educational Resource
Create content that will assist others in understanding digital culture or gaining digital literacy (and test this). Forms can include online documents, videos, animations, etc. (due last week of October) - Final Project
Devising and execute a creative project on a specific topic in digital culture. The significance of the project must be verified through stages of social proof and authentic application to interested parties. (Assessment: instructor approval and grading of project, plus demonstrated feedback from stakeholders -- due end of November)
